Term: Spring, 2013
Description: The National Guard Armory in Fullerton has been opened since November 2011 , serving countless amount of individuals since its opening. By providing a place to sleep, food to eat, clothes to wear, and support services, it is a safe haven for many homeless families and individuals.
The National Guard Armory was a rewarding opportunity the Health and Human Development– Inter Club Council experienced. Volunteering for the first time last year, the HHD– ICC strived to make the Armory a volunteer goal for 2013. Spending their time from 1-9pm on Friday February 8, 2013, the leaders displayed their dedication to help others. They each donated money to buy the food, prepared three course meals, and distributed the food with warm hearts and smiles. Working together, they made this event successful.
Learning Outcomes: Learning Outcomes were made before attending the event:
- SWiBAT Learn more about the HHD- ICC, their purpose, and importance in the College of Health and Human Development.
- SWiBAT Introduce myself to at least three members I have not met before in addition to reconnecting and building a relationship with at least three individuals I have encountered in the past.
- SWiBAT Participate in the event and help the HHD- ICC reach their goal with as little stress as possible.
Evidence: For my first learning outcome addressing exploration, I gave myself a score of "4-advanced", for the second learning outcome addressing socialization, I gave myself a score of "2-basic" and for the third learning outcome addressing participation, I gave myself a score of "2-basic".
In addition, I have provided photos of the HHD- ICC at the event.
Reflection: Before going to the event, I wanted to learn more about the student organization to better understand why they are volunteering at the event. The purpose of the HHD-ICC is to bridge other student organizations within the College of Health and Human Development together through cooperation and volunteerism. With this, the HHD-ICC is a community serving student organization which also promotes unity in the school body, helping each organization become successful. For instance, at this event, there was a student leader from the Master's of Social Work Association (MSWA) and a student leader from the Human Services Student Association (HSSA), working to help the HHD-ICC. After learning more about the HHD-ICC through their website and by talking to a couple of members in the group, I gave myself score of "4-advanced" for gaining the knowledge regarding the group before going to the event.
Unfortunately, the event required constant work with little time to joke around. From the beginning of cooking to the end of cleaning, students were busy throughout the event. There was little time for me to socialize with them besides have a few short conversations with them about the food or what they needed help with to prepare for the dinner. With this, I was able to introduce myself to a few new members but did not have the opportunity to reconnect with past members because they were busy guiding the new members. Therefore, I scored myself with a "2-basic"for at least trying to meet new individuals.
Lastly, the third learning outcome was given a score of "2-basic" because I was not able to stay longer than I planned. Due to a class assignment, I had to leave early in order to meet with my partner. I was able to volunteer for at least two hours, giving me the chance to see how strong of a bond the HHD-ICC had. Not only were they spending time together, but they were spending time doing what they love the most-- helping others. Even though I was not able to give a lot of time into the event, I was told that my presence was helpful. In that sense, I was happy with myself for being able to help the group have a successful and smooth experience.
